Machinery Directive

European Coordination of Notified Bodies for the Machinery Directive

Recommendation for Use sheets

About the project

The practical enforcement of the Regulation EU 2006/42 and the application of European Standards by notified bodies require an exchange of experience between notified bodies. The European Coordination of Notified Bodies for the Machinery Directive (MD) is aimed at forming a platform for discussion on a horizontal (general) as well as vertical (MD-specific) level. It consists of a Horizontal Committee and Vertical Groups.

The Technical Secretariat is responsible for the coordination of the activities of the Horizontal Committee and acts as the contact point for all parties involved in questions relating to the coordination of notified bodies for the MD in Europe. The Technical Secretariat is held by NEN and is based on a contract with the European Commission.

The European Coordination of Notified Bodies in the field of MD is the forum where notified bodies discuss all issues of a horizontal nature relating to the involvement of notified bodies in the certification of Machinery as laid down in the Machinery Directive. Solutions are proposed on technical issues and recommended for use by all notified bodies under the form of ‘Recommendations for Use‘.

Recommendation for Use sheets

Horizontal committee

Those ‘Recommendations for Use’ sheets published on this website reflect the status of horizontal Recommendation for Use sheets following the Machinery Directive which are approved by the Horizontal Committee members. They are not approved by the Machinery Working Group.

When ‘Recommendation for Use’ sheets are approved by the Machinery Working Group they are published on the website of the EC: http://ec.europa.eu/growth/sectors/mechanical-engineering/machinery_en

Vertical Groups

Depending on the priority of current issues Vertical Groups hold regular meetings, at least once a year. The solutions on technical issues are prepared under the form of ‘Recommendations for Use’ sheets which are submitted to the Horizontal Committee for approval. Like in the case of horizontal RfUs the vertical RfUs are then published on the European website.  http://ec.europa.eu/growth/sectors/mechanical-engineering/machinery_en.
